When the kids got back from school, she left them with me to prepare food for them and ended up making some for me. I was even more touched and became curious about Ella Grace. Ella was all I thought. That night I took a shower and changed into my pajamas. I lay on my bed and stared at the ceiling in the dark. There was no sleep, just Ella.

After two long hours of rolling on the bed, I decided to go down to the kitchen and get a glass of warm milk. It had proven effective in my younger days to help me sleep. I passed by the kids’ room and checked on them, sleeping soundly. I had tucked them in before I took a shower, but I was too used to checking whenever I passed by their rooms.

When I got close to the kitchen, I noticed the lights in the dining room and the kitchen were on. Did Ella forget to turn them off?

I walked to the switch to turn it off, when I heard someone moving around in the kitchen. I slowly walked to the kitchen to find Ella on her tip toes. She was trying to reach a mug on the top shelf. I placed it there because it was barely used. It was almost funny to watch her struggle, and she hadn’t noticed me yet. I walked slowly until I was right behind her. When I touched her shoulder to make her aware of my presence, she froze beneath my touch.

“Let me help.”

She turned around to face me.
